Quanta Solar has demonstrated their leading position in renewable energy solutions by winning a deal yesterday for Australia’s first wind, solar and storage hybrid power plant, the Kennedy Energy Park located in far North Queensland. Quanta Solar will provide engineering, procurement and construction services (EPC).
The power plant will feature 12 V136-3.6 MW Vestas turbines, 15 MW of solar panels and 2MW of Li ion battery storage.
Kennedy is being developed by Windlab Limited, the Australian owned, Canberra-based company and Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation of Japan. The partners successfully completed the award winning Coonooer Bridge Wind Farm last year.
Quanta Solar, an operating entity of Quanta Services Australia (QSA) and owned by USA’s largest power contractor Quanta Services Inc, has the task to deliver the EPC of the solar arrays, battery, connection points and civil work including the foundations for the wind turbines, which will be conducted by civil and pipeline contractor Nacap. Quanta Solar will also deliver all electrical balance of plant which includes modelling the park, substation design and build, electrical cabling to the turbines and grid connection to the network.
Quanta Solar is a collaboration effort by QSA companies Enscope, Consolidated Power Projects, NJ Construction and Nacap.
“We are proud to be a partner in Australia’s first large-scale grid connected wind, solar and storage hybrids. Working in partnership with Vestas and alongside Windlab and Eurus, we have developed a unique and efficient solution which will be a game changer in the ever evolving energy market”, said Mark Bumpstead, President of Quanta Services Australia
“Having three energy sources requires a detailed understanding of each source, how best to interact them with each other so you can then design, construct and ultimately operate a sustainable and secure energy supply”, Bumpstead said.
Nacap President, Matthew O’Connell echoes Bumpstead’s words saying he is proud to participate in this landmark project. “Nacap is proud to be play a strong role in new and innovative models to deliver cost effective and reliable energy to consumers. Whether it be through civil construction, gas pipelines or hydro transmission, we are keen to share our expertise”, said O’Connell.
Final words come from Windlab Limited CEO Roger Price. “Kennedy Energy Park is a first of its kind project in Australia. It will lead the nation in the deployment of innovative near base load renewable energy generation that will help the Australian industry successfully transition to a sustainable, clean energy future with less volatility”, Price said.
“We have a wonderful working relationship with Quanta Solar, whose products and service capability were instrumental in managing the challenging design, construction, grid connections and compliance to deliver a model which will provide a competitive cost of energy.”
The Energy Park commercial operations are scheduled to commence in Q4, 2018,
